Entries for April, 2003

Beta has ended. What this means, I'm not really sure. Just kidding.

We will discontinue work on updating this site; we've begun work on the prerelease. You will not see any updates to this site while we work on prerelease.

A full features list and a release date for prerelease will be posted soon. Wish us luck!

I really thank all the beta users for working with me on this; I know there are a ton of bugs that have to do with a variety of problems ranging from browser to firewall to other issues.

In any case, we're still working on prerelease, and we will be adding in one more feature: localized time settings. This is something we completely overlooked in our prerelease feature set. You will have the option of defining your time offset from GMT.

There will also be better documentation on how to use this site; we realize there is a lot of stuff here that makes on sense (and is still quite messy).

Please bear with us. We will not be patching up too many issues on this site for the sake of pushing the production of Prerelease. But continue to report bugs on the site.

For the record, image uploading and editing styles DOES work. Please make sure that after you create a CSS file and edit it (via Select Colors) you go to "edit colors" and "enable on site" regarding the proper style.

Instead of holding all the features at once, we will actually be releasing them in increments.

New features:

Hit logging
You can track how many users visit your website soon. We will be integrating some sort of nice graphical (or textual) counter feature into your site, but until then you can keep track of your site traffic. You can also create an IM profile link to see which IM users are clicking through to your tabulas.

Own Templating
You can now upload and use your own templates. We have not yet added support yet for custom entries, but this should be done sometime in the near future. Adding your own template adds it into the dropdown for the "Select Template."

We have rearranged the way the gallery works a little bit in hopes it's a little more streamlined. We've also modified "modify entry" because quite frankly it sucked.

We realize the site is still rather clunky in places - we are working to resolve all those issues shortly.

Go check it out. It's pretty generic - it's been used on LiveJournal, Blogger, etc. Nothing special.

Hit logging wasn't working too nicely. Should be fixed ... stats generation should start tonight.

The way it displays AIM data has also been changed.

You should be able to generate your own templates now, AND you can use one of our preexisting templates as a "framework." Check out your "Create Template" option under "Styles" once you log-in. We've also changed the naming scheme of our templates - they're named after Pokemon until Nintendo decides to sue us.

It's pretty nifty, I must say

New Stuff:
The template "Jigglypuff" has the option of "friendsof." This is still being tested and has not yet been incorporated into any of the other templates. The "friends of" option allows you to view the entries of people who list YOU as a friend.

We've also added a graphical thingamajig for pre-viewing the templates. Go check it out under "Select Template."

Your default usericon also becomes auto-selected for your entries now. So show your mugshot!

We've also added one layer to logging in that you cannot see. A lot of people are unable to access the log-in portions of the site due to cookie restrictions. Tabulas currently uses PHP sessions to handle user authentication; this is rather tricky and is very picky. We will be developing multiple log-in methods (e.g. cookies) so you don't have to constantly login everytime you re-visit your site. But this is quite some time down the line ... we have a lot of other issues to deal with first. In any case, you will notice no change, but if your browser has not enabled cookies you will be sent back to the log-in page instead of the add entry page.

Problems:
There are issues with daily hit logging. We're looking at it.

The future:
Over the next few weeks we're going to kink out some of the ugly UI issues, as well as developing a few new features. Look out for it!

We've implemented an "HTML" cleaner; if you forget to close HTML tags, the script should do it for you.

Please test it out and let us know your results.
Thanks!

Note: There might of been some time problems yesterday. There should be no more problems.

And we are aware that all times are EST times. We will be also working on a fix so you can select your own local time-zone. That is upcoming!

We've reset default time to GMT. We will be adding local time zone support shortly.

By popular demand, setting your own timezone now works. This took a while because we had to redo a bunch of the way the site works. Actually, the final solution for one of our problems isn't really satisfactory (it's not flexible), but we'll figure out a solution for that later (it involves the way the date formats on an entry layout [e.g. the Krabby layout displays images]).

In any case, your time settings will override time settings on your FRIENDS entries. Meaning that if someone writes an entry at 6am local time, and it's actually 7pm your time, your friends page will display it as being 7pm. However, on your friends actual Tabulas it'll show it as being 6am local time there.

More features forthcoming as soon as I can get unlazy. Smilies, anyone?

By popular demand, anonymous commenting is now enabled. However, each site must enable it manually from your Profile.

You'll also find a box that says "Make my journal private." This is to prevent the listing of your site on our public listings pages (which aren't done but will be eventually!).

These features were released a little bit early due to the negligence on my part. I didn't mean to upload the changes here, but I did.

Basically there's a new method of user authentication that allows you to remain logged in. There are still some issues with cookies that I need to work out, but overall it's working pretty well. Please note that only the "Keeped me logged in" works. Do not uncheck this box yet.

I also am still ironing out minor kinks with the entry display. The moods/books/music weren't displaying earlier, but they should be displaying now.

Update: We've also added new support for addition of attachments to posts. Please notice that after you attach up to 5 images per post, you must hit "Attach Images" before submitting the entry!

The new admin panel is something we'd been itching to fix for a while ... hope you like it!

Update: We've fixed the problems with timeoffsets. This was a problem with cookies and shtuff. Sorry!

Update again: We've fixed the flooding comments problem. This was improperly implemented and wasn't catching them before. But it should work now.

Note that although we recently added the ability to attach pre-added images from the gallery, *not all of them might work.*

The original method of creating thumbnails was purpose-specific; those images added via the gallery interface did not have the entries thumbnail generated. However, we just added support for entries thumbnail creations from gallery, so some of your older images might not have an entry thumbnail generated. If that's the case, simply re-upload the image and delete the old one.

We did run an upgrade script of sorts to try to rethumbnail as many images as possible, but it did not catch all of them.

Important Note:
If you're having trouble logging in, clear your cookies in your browser.

We're going to add the ability to attach preexisting images to your entry soon.

Soon to come:
A better working copy of the "crossposting feature," as well as added support for Blogger and Deadjournal. Due to some limitations, "cross-posting" in Blogger (blogspot) will only allow you to add it to the "preview" section; you will still have to login and manually "post" it.

We will also be adding an inline WYSIWYG editor as well as an option to have your 'default' adding entries page load up automatically.
